Play in Activism

We are built to play, and built through play.

Dr. Stuart Brown

For too long “social activism" and "play" have been separated and seen as diametrically opposed to the other: Activism is Serious, Play is Frivolous. Activism is about changing the world. Play is for children, or a waste of time.

Grassroots activism is often characterized by its solemnity in addressing ‘serious’ issues like policy reforms and the power of play is frequently overlooked as trivial in creating change, often termed “childish.” However, we know that play is power. Play is a disruptor. Play removes barriers. Play is for empathy. Play pushes for a new world design. Play is a catalyst for resilience.

Play is fundamental to social transformation in its revolutionary nature, reshaping the existing norms and formal structures that separate us. It presents a human approach to making change, by breaking down the walls between us and creating empathy, for sustainable problem-solving.
